Whether you accidentally left your headlights on, a door wasn't fully closed, or your battery is simply old, knowing how to properly use jumper cables can save you time, money, and frustration. However, using jumper cables incorrectly can damage electrical components, create sparks, cause battery explosions, or even result in personal injury. What Are Jumper Cables?

Jumper cables are heavy-duty electrical cables used to transfer power from a good battery to a discharged battery. They typically have two color-coded cables:

Red Cable = Positive (+)

Black Cable = Negative (-)

The cables allow a vehicle with a healthy battery to provide enough power for another vehicle to start.


When Should You Use Jumper Cables?

Jumper cables can be used when:

  • The battery is discharged but otherwise healthy.
  • Interior lights are dim or not working.
  • The starter clicks but does not crank.
  • The vehicle was left sitting for an extended period.
  • Lights or accessories were left on and drained the battery.

Jumper cables should NOT be used if:

  • The battery is cracked, leaking, swollen, or frozen.
  • There is a strong sulfur or rotten egg smell.
  • Battery terminals are severely damaged.
  • The vehicle uses a voltage system different from 12 volts.


What Size Jumper Cables Should You Buy?

For most passenger vehicles:

  • Minimum length: 16 feet
  • Recommended length: 20 feet
  • Recommended wire size: 4 to 6 gauge

For trucks, SUVs, and larger engines:

  • Recommended wire size: 2 to 4 gauge

Thicker cables transfer more current and perform significantly better than cheap, thin jumper cables.


Before You Start

Park the donor vehicle close enough for the cables to reach without touching vehicles together.

Turn both vehicles off.

Set the parking brake on both vehicles.

Place transmissions in Park or Neutral.

Turn off all electrical accessories such as headlights, radio, air conditioning, and heated seats.

Wear safety glasses and gloves whenever possible.


How to Properly Connect Jumper Cables

Follow these steps exactly in order.


Step 1: Connect Red Clamp to Dead Battery Positive (+)

Locate the positive terminal on the dead battery.

Connect one red clamp to the positive (+) terminal.


Step 2: Connect Red Clamp to Good Battery Positive (+)

Connect the other red clamp to the positive (+) terminal on the good battery.


Step 3: Connect Black Clamp to Good Battery Negative (-)

Connect one black clamp to the negative (-) terminal on the good battery.


Step 4: Connect Black Clamp to Engine Ground

Connect the remaining black clamp to a clean, unpainted metal part of the disabled vehicle's engine or chassis.

DO NOT connect the final black clamp directly to the dead battery's negative terminal.

This reduces the risk of sparks near the battery where explosive hydrogen gas may be present.


Starting the Vehicles

Start the donor vehicle first.

Allow it to run for 2 to 5 minutes.

Attempt to start the vehicle with the dead battery.

If the vehicle does not start, wait several more minutes and try again.

Once the disabled vehicle starts, allow both vehicles to run for several minutes.


How to Remove Jumper Cables

Remove the cables in the reverse order:

  1. Black clamp from engine ground.
  2. Black clamp from donor battery negative (-).
  3. Red clamp from donor battery positive (+).
  4. Red clamp from repaired vehicle positive (+).

Avoid allowing the clamps to touch each other during removal.


Important Safety Warnings

Never Reverse Polarity

Connecting positive to negative can:

  • Destroy alternators
  • Damage electronic control modules
  • Blow fuses
  • Damage battery sensors
  • Cause sparks or fire

Always double-check cable placement before starting either vehicle.


Never Smoke Near Batteries

Lead-acid batteries produce hydrogen gas, which is highly explosive.

Keep sparks, cigarettes, and open flames away from batteries.


Inspect Batteries Before Jump Starting

Do not jump start a battery that is:

  • Leaking
  • Cracked
  • Bulging
  • Frozen

Replace the battery immediately.


Be Careful with Hybrid and Electric Vehicles

Many hybrid and electric vehicles have unique jump-starting procedures.

Always consult the owner's manual before attempting to jump-start these vehicles.

Why Your Vehicle May Still Not Start

If a jump start doesn't work, the problem may not be the battery.

How Long Should You Drive After a Jump Start?

Once the vehicle starts, drive for at least 20 to 30 minutes.

This allows the alternator to recharge the battery.

If the battery repeatedly dies after charging, it may need replacement or the charging system may require diagnosis.
