What Is a Spark Plug?

A spark plug is a small device that screws into the engine’s cylinder head. What Are Spark Plugs Made Of?

Spark plugs are made from a combination of heat- and electricity-resistant materials. Here's a breakdown of their key components:

  • Shell – Usually steel, this outer casing holds the plug in place and threads into the engine.
     
  • Insulator – Made of ceramic, this keeps the voltage from arcing to metal parts of the engine.

Double Iridium / Ruthenium Spark Plugs

  • Used in high-performance or direct-injection engines
     
  • Top-tier plugs
     
  • Designed for the full life of the vehicle
     
  • Can handle extreme temps and pressure
     

Hot vs. Cold Spark Plugs:

  • Hot plugs retain heat longer (for normal driving)
     
  • Cold plugs dissipate heat faster (for turbocharged/high-performance builds)
     

Always use the correct heat range specified by your engine manufacturer.


How to Change Your Spark Plugs: DIY Guide

Changing spark plugs is one of the easiest DIY tasks with basic tools and a little patience. Here’s a simplified step-by-step:


Tools You’ll Need:

  • Spark plug socket (with rubber insert)
     
  • Ratchet wrench and extension
     
  • Torque wrench (for exact tightness)
     
  • Spark plug gap tool
     
  • Anti-seize (optional, only if specified)
     
  • Dielectric grease (for ignition boots)
     

Steps:

  1. Let the engine cool completely. Hot plugs can strip threads.
     
  2. Locate the spark plugs (under coil packs or plug wires).
     
  3. Remove ignition coil or plug wire. Gently twist and pull.
     
  4. Use spark plug socket and extension to remove old plug.
     
  5. Check plug condition – black (rich), white (lean), oily (bad valve seal), or ash-colored (normal).
     
  6. Gap new plugs to spec (if not pre-gapped).
     
  7. Thread in new plug by hand to avoid cross-threading.
     
  8. Torque to spec (usually 18–25 ft-lbs).
     
  9. Reinstall coil pack or wire, apply dielectric grease if needed.
